Why is proper Equipment important to an athlete over 30?

As you reach for the tennis racquet that you used to play with 15 years ago when you were in your early twenties, you may want to have a second look at it.  The aluminum frame that was state-of-the-art 15 years ago may not be the best thing for you at this stage in your life.  As we age our muscle mass and structure changes.  We are no longer as flexible as we were 5 years ago.  There is probably more mass and we don’t recover as fast.  These changes can occur as early as 30 years of age even though our minds refuse to admit it.

Technology has changed dramatically in recent years so that injury rates have dropped significantly.  Yes, people still get injured but this is usually a training issue rather than an equipment failure, IF they have the proper equipment. That aluminum racquet has been replaced by carbon fibre and now has a bigger sweet spot with vibration dampening mechanisms.  These all will contribute to a more enjoyable (and possible injury free) experience.

One of the most used but least understood pieces of equipment are your shoes. It is extremely important that you have proper footwear for greater enjoyment of you activity.  Making sure that your running shoes are up to date and fit properly is important in avoiding lower limb injuries.  Remember, our feet are our base of support and must endure the abuse of up to five times our body weight.  Keeping your running shoes up to date will actually prevent injury.  Fit is one of the most important things to remember when looking for new shoes.  Chances are very good that your shoe size has changed in the last few years.  This is not because your feet have grown but, as we age, the arches may drop which will elongate your feet.  You should also make sure that you have adequate room for your feet by adding an extra 3/8 of an inch from your longest toe to the end of the shoe.  This is to allow for movement inside the shoe.  As our foot hits the ground the shoe will stop but your foot doesn’t.  It will slide forward and if there is inadequate space then your toes will “bang” into the front of the shoe creating “Black Toe”.  Running shoes are designed to last between 300 to 500 miles, using them beyond this point will increase your potential for injury.

When starting any activity you should always get advice from the experts in the field.  Whether it be starting a running program or riding a bike or playing tennis proper equipment will make your activity less strenuous, and more enjoyable and most importantly....injury free.  At the first sign of injury or pain, seek help from a medical professional.
